About the Customer

The client is one of the leading telecom operators in CIV, serving millions of subscribers
across the country. The company operates under strict regulatory standards covering
SIM registration, customer identity verification, and data compliance.

Opportunity

Regulations required the operator to verify the National Identification Number (NIN) for
its entire customer base. The process relied fully on manual document review and data
entry, where agents reviewed each submitted ID, extracted key fields by hand, and
entered records into backend systems individually.

As subscriber volumes increased and compliance deadlines tightened, the process
could not keep up:

  • Slow turnaround — NIN verification was slow, delaying SIM registration and
    compliance timelines
  • Human errors and data inconsistencies — Manual entry introduced
    inaccuracies that affected record integrity
  • Volume handling difficulties — Large numbers of customer documents created
    operational bottlenecks
  • Compliance risk — delays and backlogs threatened the ability to meet
    regulatory deadlines
  • Data Security exposure — sensitive identity data passed through too many
    manual touchpoints
The operator needed a solution that could process documents at volume, maintain
accuracy, and satisfy regulatory requirements without overhauling existing
    infrastructure.

Approach

An AI-driven OCR solution was implemented to automate NIN data extraction and
digitization from submitted identity documents.

  • Scans NIN documents across multiple formats
  • Extracts key identity fields — NIN number, name, date of birth — with high
    accuracy
  • Converts unstructured document data into structured, system-ready records
  • Integrates with the operator’s existing verification and backend systems
  • Applies secure processing controls to protect sensitive personal data

The Impact

The OCR implementation turned a heavily manual compliance process into a reliable
digital workflow. Verification timelines shortened, customer onboarding moved faster,
and manual data entry was eliminated, along with the errors it consistently produced.
The system absorbed high document volumes without added staffing, while machine-
processed records brought consistency across backend systems. Audit-ready digital
records reinforced the operator’s compliance standing, and customers experienced
fewer delays at the point of SIM registration.
